Animation Projection

Projection Animation

Animation Projection

This is an animation I created to be projected on to the surface of a building in downtown Bellingham, WA. Working within the confines of the building dimensions, columns, and windows, I created hand drawn animation to the song “Dwell” by Mount Saturn, a local Bellingham band. The imagery is inspired by the vivid dreams and nightmares I’ve had my whole life.

Building Blueprint

Building Blueprint

Here is the blueprint of the building I was given, demonstrating the placement of windows and columns. I was informed that the top and bottom row of windows would not show any projection on them, due to black out curtains. This was something I carefully took into account when drawing each frame.

Rotoscope Template

In order to achieve a seamless animation with accurate proportions, I used footage I found online as well as footage I shot myself to lay a template that I could draw over. This is the skeleton to the animation, a technique called “rotoscoping”.

Building Projection

This is a final video of the animation projected onto the building. Unfortunately the owners neglected to inform us that they had placed blackout curtains on all of the windows, not just the top and bottom rows, so my animation was a bit obscured. However, the feelings of overwhelm and unease that I was aiming to portray still came across successfully.
